2007 South Carolina Midwinter Piping Plover Census - February 8-11, 2007

This year's SC midwinter Piping Plover Census, a cooperative effort by CRBO, SC DNR, and nonprofit + federal + private parters, was a record-setting endeavor.  Census teams found 114 Piping Plovers along the South Carolina coast during the official census period.  An additional 10 Piping Plovers were known to be at Capers Island in Beaufort County, but scheduling issues combined with shallow island approaches and weak high tides prevented a visit during the official 4-day census period.

Participants also counted Wilson's Plovers and Red Knots - they found 13 Wilson's Plovers (much fewer than the previous 2 years) and 462 Red Knots.

Census participants noted (and photographed) multiple banded Piping Plovers and Red Knots; details have been forwarded to the relevant authorities.
